Person Buys a ‘New’ iPhone, Ends up Getting a Unit With Personal Data Already on it

When you get rid of a phone, or any piece of technology really, resetting it completely should be step one in the process. But sometimes that doesn’t happen, and in a worst-case scenario that phone can get back out int the world. Which appears to be the case in one new story.

Stuff has the story this week. Glen Cottle lives in New Zealand and visited a Smith’s City store in Timaru to buy a new iPhone. The device was sealed and ready to go, as one might expect, but when Cottle turned the phone on and started using it he discovered it wasn’t so fresh. Specifically, there was still data on the handset including voice messages from the previous owner’s daughter, health data, bank information, and flight info as well.



However, while a previous owner is suggested, it’s possible that’s not the case, as pointed out by Apple Insider on Thursday. It’s likely that the handset was a demo unit at some point in its lifecycle, with hints on the device pointing to that possibility. That includes a note in the Noes app talking about a trip up Big Sur in California. Apple’s marketing leans into its California roots, even in international markets.

For Cottle to be able to use the phone, especially if it was previously owned, suggests the handset wasn’t secured by a passcode or through Face ID. That could also lean into the idea that it’s a demo unit.

Whatever the situation is, whether it’s a demo unit resealed or a previously-owned handset that had the same treatment, it’s imperative to remember to completely wipe a handset you plan on selling.

How to See the Week View in the Calendar App on Your iPhone

Want to see what any given week has in store for you in your iPhone's Calendar app? Just turn your iPhone on its side and you'll see your week in more detail. The Calendar app is one of a handful of iOS apps that shows you a different view if you hold your iPhone horizontally instead of upright. (You can see the Week view in both landscape and portrait oritentation on the iPad.) Looking at events in the week view allows you to see at a glance what you have planned over the next few days and makes it easy to reschedule events by dragging them from one time slot or day to another. Here's how to see the week view in Calendar.

Open the Calendar app and rotate your iPhone sideways so you're holding it horizontally (this is called landscape mode).


If the screen doesn't rotate to landscape mode when you turn your iPhone, you might have portrait orientation lock turned on. The week view should open automatically.



Depending on your model of iPhone, you may need to tap the Week tab at the top of the screen in addition to turning your iPhone sideways.




Once in the week view, you can swipe side-to-side and up and down to view the week's events.


Swiping side to side will also allow you to view events scheduled in past and upcoming weeks in the week view.


You can also use this view to easily reschedule events to a different day or time that week by pressing on the event until it pops out and changes color and then dragging and dropping it into the new time slot. Read this article to learn more about how to do this.

Apple Seeds iOS 12.3 Beta 2 to Developers

In March, Apple officially released iOS 12.2 to the public. That software wasn’t a major upgrade, but it did welcome things like Apple News+ to the mix.

Update: Apple has officially seeded the second corresponding public beta of iOS 12.3 to public beta testers. The new software is available now for public beta testers. Simply update as usual on a registered device within the program.

Now, Apple is moving ahead with betas for the next update to its mobile operating system. Today, Apple officially seeded the second developer beta of iOS 12.3. This is appears to be a minor update in scale, with the company focusing primarily on behind-the-scenes bug fixes and general overall improvements. However, the company did lay the groundwork for the public launch of its revamped TV app later this year with the first developer beta. Now, with the second, Apple will continue to tweak the formula to get it ready for the public.

To update, developers that have registered their supported iOS devices simply need to open Settings –> General –> Software Update and then follow the onscreen instructions.

Apple typically kicks things off with a developer beta, but a corresponding public beta of the same software will likely launch in short order.
